Good-bye Key West

1 04 2012

It’s  5:45 AM and I’m too excited to sleep.  We leave this morning for Canada and it will take us one and a half months (if all goes well).  We are leaving with another couple who own a sailboat and will be taking it to New York.  They have done the trip a couple times.  Our departure time is 7 AM.

Our neighbours were up to say good-bye and help us leave the dock.  The motors purred and except for a stubborn line that wouldn’t come off the  pilon,we were off.  The sunrise was awesome with strips of pink and purple with the huge sun shining.  I was thinking how exciting the beginning of journeys are!  Since my favorite writers are travel writers, I’ll be quoting some of them in my blog sometimes;like now:   Marcel Proust wrote: “A true journey ,no matter how long the travel .  The real voyage of discovery consists not in seeing  new landscapes, but in having new eyes.”  Also Alice  Steinbach wrote: “All journeys have secret destinations of which the traveller is unaware.”  We’re believing that this trip will be a life-changing adventure !

The Atlantic ocean was turquoise and the waves were on the beam for most of the day so it made for a “rocky” ride but we travelled half way through the Keys and made it to Channel Five anchorage (our first on the Atllanic).  We had spagetti dinner and sat in our aft deck for “happy hour  and listened to great music on Sirius radio, (really roughing it, eh).   We still can’t get over the color of the water and even had dolphins cross our bow.  Tomorrow should be a following sea which will minimize rocking and we might make it to Miami.  Goodnight.
